It wasn't as much a matter of killing as much civilians as they can, it was more of a "look at what weapon we have, we will use it on you more if you don't surrender" kind of thing, meant to scare the stuff out of the country. If they wanted to kill most of the civilian population, it would have been dropped on Tokyo. Guess what the Japanese emperor did? His ass surrendered.

Invading japan by land would have costed a lot more lives, and would have prolonged the war by some years.

We nuked their asses to scare them into surrendering, a ground invasion would've just been more casualties and overall a bad option since we had the most powerful weapon in history back then.
