Archery training seems to be mostly broken, so for now you need to train by arming the marksdwarves then making them take potshots at living targets, preferably something that can't attack them or shoot back. Live training also gives much more XP than shooting at targets.

A tower is just layers of walls build on top of each other with the stairs inside (if you make it hollow with a door) or the outside, and then fortifications around the top so your archers can fire out without too much risk of being hit provided the enemy doesn't get too close.
Once you have a tower, station archers on the top and watch those goblins flee.
Make sure you don't station them up there when elite bowgoblins are around. They have unbelievable accuracy and will probably tag your dwarves straight through any fortifications.

result:I never want to see a hydra for real. Never.
On the other hand, it did lose 4 necks and bleed to death after I left control mode and unpaused the game.
My adventurer kills hydras and dragons without even being hit.

The only problem with hydras is that you need a slashing weapon to kill them easily. If you use a spear or hammer or similar weapons it is difficult to tell which heads you have slain because they are still attached.

Get a caged creature (wild animal or hostile), give dwarves bows and wooden arrows and wooden swords, dig out an arena shaped cave, put cage in centre (preferably hostile elitist swordgoblin), get dwarves inside and lock the doors, release the cage.

It's fun to watch. Just...make sure you have medical backup else you lose a lot of dwarves.
Good training.

What's a really good quick way to kill a bunch of my dwarfs? and do i need to bury every single one of them? I set my population cap to 100 just then but I already had 157, so I have to cull them.

build weapon trap with 4-10 weapons.
make a burrow over it
link it to a lever
assign dwarf to burrow.
pull lever
???
profit.

well you don't have to bury them all, you have to create tombs or something (i forgot) for each dead dwarf. yes, you need to build a tomb for each one of them or your fortress is going to be filled with ghosts

No, create an upright weapon with 4-10 weapons in it.

I'm working on a race of green-skinned swamp humanoids called Orgs (and she-Orgs). They're larger than humans, alcohol dependent like dwarves, and wield clubs that dole out blunt-force trauma like no one's business. All though they have loose morals, they aren't as loose as goblins, so they should have at least shaky relations with other sapients.

They're quite clumsy, so it can be hard to land a hit when adventuring as one. Luckily, they can pack a punch when they can connect due to their large size and significantly higher strength averages. Along with being able to wield clubs and large clubs, they can use mauls and great shields (larger, higher tier shields) Also, they have 4 fingers on each hand and 3 toes on each foot, just for stuffs n' gigs.

I'm also planning on giving them thick, leatherlike skin and a dulled sense of pain (if possible).

yes, I know the genders aren't right for the kids

jeezum, what a family

(aw hell I get it now)

189 dwarves + 150 animals + 1100+ body parts/corpses and 70 FPS

umad

- Make a squad of all the dwarves you wish to kill
- Assign them no weapons or supplies
- Send them outside of your fortress and lock the gates (or wall them in somewhere)
- Wait.

They're stationed outside and/or trapped so won't come back in. If you get invaded then it's just a bonus 57 dwarves to punch at goblin swordsmen.

And no, you don't have to bury them all. Just assign a refuse pile to corpses.
