The US is still working to instill a lasting humanitarian government that isn't left to fester under the rot of Islamic law. The right thing to do would be to stay, but the US doesn't have the finances to manage the whole thing on its own and nobody else seems to give a forget about tens of millions of people that have been murdered and oppressed by their rulers for thousands of years.

you guys understand the coast guard lives in costal cities right? he's not going to Afghanistan. just pretend he's becoming a fireman that drives a helicopters.

Go to officer school then military (ROTC can pay for your education adn when your an officer you get better pay)

obama flew the plane into the wtc

I love this country. I want to give back to it. I want a purpose in life. I don't want to work 9-5 and hate my life for no reason. I'd rather work my ass off to give someone else a good life.

Really the best way you could give back to your country is by completing college, getting a job and paying taxes (not that your government will do anything useful with it). Killing a few towel heads in the middle east isn't going to do stuff for your country. But if you just want to be a tough guy - okay.

That's a pretty good point.

Still, I think his main reason is for the honor.

The Air Force, maybe. The Coast Guard, however, is a division in the military where they actually help save lives for our people. My dad deals with search and rescue missions from time to time.
