Author Topic: Discussion: The addictivity of first person shooters  (Read 894 times)

This is a discussion thread, we discuss the topic at hand, "Why people enjoy First Person Shooters so much" and absolutely nothing else.

Back to the point:

I've found it hard to believe that people are so addicted to first person shooters that are really just the same scenario playing out hundreds of times with nothing spectacular happening. CS:S and CoD <whatever> are perfect examples. I can't think of a reason myself, but maybe that's because I don't play lots of FPS games apart from TF2.

Please share your input.

which part however?

The success of getting a kill? Or the skill of doing it?

well I'm not addicting to first person shooters so to speak, but I do play games like Black Ops or MW2 alot. in MW2, I play alot of Hardcore matched, mainly Mosh Pit because I dont like picking stuff in particular, but I play MW2 mainly for Quick Scopes/No Scopes matches. so in that case, it's the skill of getting kills, considering most of the time when someone plays me they know they're going to lose unless they sit on the game all day long 23/6+, or people freak when I join their matches.

in Black Ops, it's just the success of getting a kill, because I dont really use much skill in Black Ops, I just charge, and if not, I sit back with some sort of assault rifle or my L96. in that case , again, it's just the success of a kill

Why would you play any other genre of game?  The same thing happens every time if you generalize enough.  FPSes are a real fun reflex test to some, it's a fun little challenge to be the best.  I know I love them for that reason.

I can't get addicted to first person shooters, I just get sick of them after a hour of playtime, I can manage 2 in tf2 with class jumping though.

In the last few weeks I've played Red Faction: Armageddon, Dawn of War, Osmos, VVVVVVVV, Crayon Physics Deluxe and... Republic Commando.

FPS isn't really my thing at all, but I love me some Republic Commando.

So far, i only have 1 FPS.
Battlefield 1943.
It's pretty fun, if you can get past the countless times that you will be killed ridiculously.

Anyways, FPSes are not for everyone. Many handicapped little stuffhead kids that everyone keeps killing over and over are always screaming obscenities and saying that they will do stuff like kill you, your family, your dog, and even your loving TEDDY BEAR. I am not loving joking. That happened to someone.
There are plenty of people who make good use of FPSes. For example, a friend of mine has Cod: Black Ops. He said that he and another friend of his gave a name to the spinning generator thing in the russian zombie lab level.
Jorge.
We laughed our asses off on that one.

I find it annoying when people say quick scoping takes skill when really all it is is exploiting a broken game mechanic.

Quickscoping in TF2 is hilarious, especially when they're like 20 feet away from you and they rage because they think you're aimbotting.

Does it count as FPS if you're a Hunter in WoW? :cookieMonster:
