Author Topic: Computer Illiterate Dad  (Read 1152 times)

So here is the story. My Dad thinks I have been using is MacBook Air too long, so he has told me to shut it off and give it to him. The reason being, it was really heated from Blockland, and I asked my Grandpa for A way to cool it down. My Dad got pissed and thought that when the computer heats up, it is going to "die". He started a whole scene in my house. I think he thinks that computers are like humans, and will die if they heat up. Sorry, I needed to rant about it to someone who is not computer illiterate... I am also currently typing this from my PS3. /rant

So you didn't just tell him he's wrong and explain to him that he doesn't know stuff....? You just let him yell at you or something?

Your fan will wear out from continual use and that can cause overheating, but the PC shuts down before any damage can be done so I dunno

I did explain. He just yelled more,

He must not have a job that involves technology

My mom thinks computers are responsible for every ailment I get. :I

Mothers and computers don't mix well.

This.

Whenever any laptop or computer starts reaching temperatures that will cause unsafe operations or damage to internal components, they WILL shut down automatically.  Usually around 100C, but those will make your computer hot to the touch anyway.

You should try explaining it differently. I don't know how you did, but don't get bothered by his yelling, and keep your voice calm but in a stern manner and it will sound more convincing than if you're, say, just whining or getting mad/yelling at him that he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Works for me.

i found that kind of funny :D

Before reading Building PCs for Dummies, my dad was just a "illiterate" as your dad on terms of computers. (I thought he was good at this kind of stuff, I mean, he like, used to work for Intel!)

I tried explaining that he has only had the computer for 4 months and the computer is not close to overheating, He says that they are like humans and they will die if they get too hot. I say no... He tells me to get in my room and stay there.

Whilst this is true, I have tested some case fans that have been running at full speed from a MOLEX connection, 24/7 for 7 years, and they still run fine. They were just like $8 new and both are still running like new.
So the chances of it happening aren't very good.
