(after the fact there were two 'megathreads' for bitcoins, I kinda assume a good deal of you have an idea what they are)

Yup, there was an old topic, and it was here:

If you don't know what bitcoins are, go here first:
http://www.weusecoins.com/

If you want to mine, follow theses steps:
0. Get the base bitcoin app installed and set up, make a 'wallet'. (go to weusecoins.com)
1. Go here: http://bitcointalk.org/?topic=3878.0
2. Download latest version
3. Install
4. Go here: http://mining.bitcoin.cz/
5. Register an account
6. Set send threshold to 0.01 (reccomended, possibly default)
7. Copy that address in the main bitcoin app to the "wallet" field.
8. Click "register new worker"
9. fill in a name, and submit
10. Fill in the bitcoin miner application like the picture below
10a. (name is account name, period, worker name)
10b. (password is password you made for the site)
10c. (host is "api.bitcoin.cz")
10d. (port is 8332)

a terrible currency for handicapped people that know nothing about politics or for people buying guns/drugs/children online

Bitcoins are hard to get unless you spend like $5000 on a mining rig like some people do.

which means the rich get richer and the poor get what's left over from the rich!

What do politics have to do with bitcoins?

oh boo hoo to you
They're fun to collect and give to people.

Not really.
Either you can mine them yourself, get people to donate to you (or buy something from you, if you have anything to sell) or exchange them for 'real' currency.
Besides, decent mining 'rigs' start at about 300$ according to the wiki.
Granted, you don't even need that, most modern computers can mine at some rate just fine.

it's not like you can walk into wal-mart and buy stuff with them, yes
but it's certainly gaining popularity

that doesn't matter. when your currency does this:

it's loving worthless
ill never use em.
finally a bisjac post i can agree with

its not advertized as an investment. (short term im guessing? since its loving unstable and may up and be gone forever suddenly)
but as a currency instead. THATS why i hate it.

im sure kids that spout a bunch of anti government stuff can preach about how great they are. but they are a fools way to make money.

giving it a try because why not, holla holla get a minuscule amount of dolla

also considering mtgox got hacked and account data released and bruce wagner (owner of one of the larger bitcoin exchanges) ran off with 25k in buttcoins, more reasons not to use them
