This definitely does not deserve it's own thread. The server is busy. A lot of people play minecraft, ergo a lot of people are trying to update. Just be patient and wait.

It's the Minecraft server. Wait a bit and you might be able to update, if not, wait till late night and try since most players live in America many should be asleep by then.

I noticed that the launcher can't connect to Minecraft.net, but logging into the in-browser version lets it update. Does this help at all?

I mean, it's not that hard of a concept to understand. He's not asking an elaborate question that needs many answers. A lot of people are trying to download it, the servers are busy. I mean it's that simple :P
