The empire has just as much claim to Skyrim as the nords.
Talos of Atmora was the first emperor. The empire started in Skyrim and all of the human races of Tamriel can track their ancestry back to the nords, so they can track their ancestry back to being the first to claim the region just as the nords do.

It's all about wanting power, don't let yourself think this war has anything to do with anything else.

Is it worth going through the thieves guild quest line in skyrim? I mean, do I get good gold/gear from it? I got a horse the the dark brotherhood.

The quests are fun, I'm not sure why you would limit yourself to the quest for gold and gear, Skyrim has so much more to offer you.

I tend to support the empire while simultaneously making myself an enemy of the Thalmor.
I hate the elves, but I don't think there is need for a bloody revolution against the empire. The people of Skyrim should just worship in secret and prepare themselves for World War II (I call it this because the last war was the great war, which matches earth's history) there is no need to spill our own blood.
