Ok so we just got cable internet and they gave us this Cisco router (model DPC3825) and I can connect to it with my pc with is wireless but the computer that the modem is hooked up to cannot connect to the internet. It is running windows vista and it cannot identify the router.

It is running windows vista

I think i have found your problem.

I think i have found your problem.
Irrelevant, Windows Vista appears to be (miraculously) more stable than 7 on some of my machines with proper updates.
First things first, is the cable to the computer hooked up to the modem or the router? And make sure it's in the RJ45 (ethernet) port.
It should be hooked up to the router.

worst problem i had with vista was the add and remove programs, which sometimes crashes explorer.exe
explain why you hate vista before you stuff?

but when you get to 64 bit vista, that's an entirely different story.

hnng fine windows 7
The reason that Windows 7 uses more RAM is because Windows 7 was released during a time (right now) in which 4GB of RAM is the norm, 2GB a minimum usually.  During Windows XP's time, the minimum might've been around 128MB of RAM and the norm probably 512MB-1GB.

Well we only have one box (router or modem I can't tell which one) and yes it is connected with an Ethernet cable into the RJ45 port.

I think I may have a better question to what is wrong with it. I hooked up my computer to it and it worked fine (mine is windows 7). I think the problem is something interfering with the computer not letting it connect to the internet. I just can't figure out what it is.

Does the computer have Manual IP settings from a different network that had a different gateway?

How do I figure this out? It probably does because we had a different ISP at a different location.

Double post

I fixed it, all I had to do was make it automatically find an IP address.
