I know there was a topic and everything, but i can't look for it right now.
anyways i went and installed Ubuntu, and i am trying to set up the internet. is it bad i have no idea what kind of connection i have?

i'm sure that's a problem. i just know the word router is tossed around a lot here, and i've got a little box with a usb port that plugs into my computer and connects to the main box on the other computer, which connects to the internet.
it's a netgear.

so yeah, help? i'll be happy to give any info you need to help

Oh it's a wireless internet connection.

Well, since OP's question is solved and this thread isn't locked yet, anyone know how to get internet working in Slackware 13.37?

what are you talking about, i don't know how to get it working, even though i know what kind

Do you have any password?
If so, enter it EXACTLY (Including the caps) and click connect.
Could you take a pic of what shows up when you try to connect? I haven't tried connecting in awhile.

Google the "modem" model and make, post a link to something that tells more about it. I could guess that it is a simple plug n' play 3g modem because of the usb and wirelessness, have you tried pluggin it into your computer, what does it say when you do?

If you're trying to connect via wireless you need to know your SSID and it's password
if it's wired ubuntu should automatically use it.

Ensure that your wireless device is turned on.

Click the Network Manager icon in the system notification area.

Under Wireless Networks click on the network you want to connect to.

Slightly depends what version you're on.

the only thing the password does is get me onto my computer. i have one for connection, tried that.

my dad seems to think the cause is because we recently switched out the computer this one connects to and it lost it's network or something. i personally don't think so. otherwise this wouldn't work.

can't seem to find the model. it's by dell, though. then the one i'm currently connected to is a NETGEAR.

yeah i'm using the latest version and wireless networks don't pop up. oh and it says i'm missing firmware for some reason.

if you're on a mac, you need to buy one of these. the mac's built-in wireless router isn't open source due to it being able to broadcast and pick up frequencies reserved for military and police use
