Speaking of the Nether, I believe I disabled the portal that was causing our troubles.

Did the ravine possibly lead to a cave with a staircase going up? If so the same thing happened to me, but you're not far from the spawn, at all.

fff, how long does it take the server to restart Now I'm getting a communication error and a "bad login" error.

About 10 secs, you have to wait on the Main Menu and not try to instantly connect. If bad login and other erros like that you have to restart Minecraft.
