Author Topic: Resident Evil Megathread  (Read 921 times)

Resident Evil, known as Biohazard (バイオハザード) in Japan, is a highly successful franchise of survival horror and science fiction that started life as video games developed by Capcom and created by Shinji Mikami. The games have sold over 30 million copies as of February 2006.
The series is often credited with popularizing the survival horror game genre. It is often miscredited with created the survival horror genre, when in fact the genre was established by Infogrames' 1992 Alone in the Dark. Resident Evil did establish the name of the genre with a subtitle within the game that appeared while loading a saved game, which often leads to confusion concerning the pedigree of the genre to new players.

The success of this franchise has spawned several video games, several comic book series, novelizations, four Hollywood action films, and a variety of action figures. While the games mostly adhere to a consistent storyline, there are enough deviations from the game plot within the films and novels to be considered alternate story lines.

So yeah, discuss.
Also, I play Resident Evil 5 on the PS3. Message me if you wanna play. B)

Resident evil 1-3 were the best. 4-5 were more fast paced action shooter, and even the new one Resident Evil: ORC is going to be like 4 and 5, just with the original zombies and city. The character models will be the same for the characters as in 4 and 5. So leon looks like he did in 4, and chris and jill look like 5.

Played RE5. Controls were hard to grasp at first, but the game was pretty fun, besides the lack of ammo :t

I think they tried to make it more like the first ones, in a way that you have to conserve your ammo. But they kinda forgeted up when they made it so easy to get inf ammo. And once you got inf ammo for one gun, you really didn't need anything else, a revolver, or something.

the change 4 marked was so drastic its not a survival horror anymore

theres ammo everywhere and you hardly lack it

its more like a shooter now
and mercenaries
so fun

Great megathread, copied stuff from the wiki, and didn't mention any of the games or movies.
I'm willing to bet op has never played Res 1 or 2.

re1, re2, re3
all others are complete crap.

there is nothing survival about carrying around 6 guns with stuffloads of upgrades and basically infinite ammo.
there is nothing horror about an over the shoulder action shooter game.

the fear is gone. and the puzzles are gone.

LIAR! They had that totally awesome sliding puzzle in 4! That was totally great, and not annoying.

the new ones you always end up in a "zone" map open area where you fight off a hoard with all your weapons. then follow some linear path to the next battle zone.

i loved going back and forth in a building for hours collecting key items to open more of the building.
encouraged to barely use your ammo and simply avoid enemies. this was the greatness of the old ones.
the challenge was about how few saves you could do and how few hours you can complete it.

I love the traps that involve you taking some badass gun from the wall and then something almost killing you.

Now, RE:4-5 arn't "bad" there just not classic Resident Evil. Their good games, just not classic horror. And they are still horror, just fast paced action horror, not survival horror.

This. It seems like Capcom is just going to the action gamers instead of their roots. I think the Remake of RE1 was the best one so far.

i remember the first time playing each of the old ones. all carefully walking down hallways, wondering what door i should try out. one might lead to a room that i can slowly pick for items, and read tons of back-story left all over.
then perhaps another door will be this boss monster that pounces into the hall and you cant even fight it, but instead have to run back through the building to lose it.

the new ones have a forgetking currency, weapon upgrading and ammo buying. jesus christ.
there never is a time i have to stop and think about where i might have to go next, never have to study my map to see what doors i havnt tried.
there is no lingering in the back of your mind if the next area is infested with enemies, because it always is. but you dont care because you have craploads of weapon to take them down.

it became an arcade borefest

Played and beat all of them, including the two they released on Wii

Thank you.

Resident Evil 4 isn't bad, it's just not classic or much of a survival. Resident Evil 5 is the same thing, just doesn't have the same sort of eerie scenery. Tbh I'd rather play RE4, but it doesn't have an online feature, which playing with friends was what made RE5 so fun.
