Author Topic: My Disappointment in MC  (Read 1623 times)

Now before I start talking- I do think Minecraft is still great game, but there is quite a few more cons than I originally thought IMO.

For one thing, it's excruciatingly complicated just to start a server. (especially since I have little to no knowledge on networks and internet and such.)
Then, the chat is unappealing. I just don't like how there chat is set up, it's in the way, and their font is kind of difficult for me.
And on the servers that are up, (in most of them that I saw) you have to read a truckload of signs just to know what to do.
And for mods, you have to go into the files (which are in a less convenient location) and you have to open minecraft.jar with winrar or something, and copy files into there, which is a hassle IMO.
And you can't change from creative mode, to survival mode. I think that would be very useful a feature.

I know a lot of these aren't that big a deal to a lot of people, but I like easy to play, simple, fun games. And Minecraft seems like it needs a lot more before it gets to that point. I just hope that the full version isn't like this. :/

this is how it is with almost every game; blockland is one of rare games where you don't really need to forward anything (because it does it itself, iirc).

: and | are nearly exactly the same in minecraft's font lol.

a easier way of adding mods is planned afaik, but knowing minecraft, it'll take 8 months to add and break absolutely everything when added.

there's some tutorials for doing this on youtube, it basically involves using a common minecraft editing program to change a single variable in the game save file.

The only problem for me is that it's unoptimized. I'm still on 1.7.3 because of that. :(

Once you learn how to port foward you will never forget and it will be very easy from there.

Fair enough i guess, although i don't know why some people care about flashy fonts.

Servers that make you read too many signs to know what to do is loving handicapped, i agree with this. These servers need to use less mods.

Dunno how copying classes inside a jar is a very big hassle. Besides, there's going to be mod support soon.

Install the single player commands mod and you can change between them or use a self SMP server. I'm pretty sure notch wont add that feature.

What minecraft are you using?
Demo?

Texture packs.

That's not Minecraft's fault.

And for mods, you have to go into the files (which are in a less convenient location) and you have to open minecraft.jar with winrar or something, and copy files into there, which is a hassle IMO.

That's because mods are not supported and have to be hacked into the game.

And you can't change from creative mode, to survival mode.

Yes you can.

Cheater.

What sort of stupid game developer would deliberatly let you change a world to survival.
You could just plant lots if diamond or whatever and mine it easily.

it's a sandbox game, you should be able to do whatever the hell you want.

if a server operator wants to set up a nice town or ruins for the players to explore, being able to quickly switch between survival/creative without mucking about in the game files would be extremely useful.

I actually know the font very well, because I used to play this flash game that used that same font.

But you can...(in mp)
mp?

Well that kind of stinks. All I really want is to start a nice little game to play of survival or something with a friend, and it's so complicated..
: and | are nearly exactly the same in minecraft's font lol.

oh, that seems easy, but being a sandbox game, I would think that the option to switch modes would already be in the game. Since Sandbox games usually give a little more freedom to do whatever you like.

Once you learn how to port foward you will never forget and it will be very easy from there.
well I went to thewikipedia page and it seemed really complicated..
...although i don't know why some people care about flashy fonts.well it's not that I want flashy fonts, I just want something easy to read and out of the way. Something about the way they did it doesn't seem to do that for me.
Dunno how copying classes inside a jar is a very big hassle. Besides, there's going to be mod support soon. oh cool, mod support would be nice. The thing that made it a hassle to me is that for some reason winrar won't let me simply paste the files into the .jar file. So I have to extract the files, then add to it, then replace all the files into a .zip, then change it back to a .jar.
What minecraft are you using?
Demo? I'm using 1.8. I didn't know there was a demo, I guess I should have looked harder, lol
Texture packs. They change the chat font? ok, that might fix my problem, lol
That's not Minecraft's fault. well yeah, I wasn't saying whose fault it was. But since the majority of servers I saw were like that, it is a problem I have with Mc
Yes you can. :o awesome, thanks

Cheater.
nono, what I meant was, like if you want to build a special type of server, and then if you want to host it you don't want people to be able to build whatever they want, or fly around. So you'd switch it to survival.

Now before I start talking- I do think Minecraft is still great game, but there is quite a few more cons than I originally thought IMO.

For one thing, it's excruciatingly complicated just to start a server. (especially since I have little to no knowledge on networks and internet and such.)
  • Save "Minecraft_Server.exe" or "Minecraft_Server.jar" to a folder.  Run it.  It will generate the files it needs and automatically start hosting (assuming you have your ports forwarded).

Then, the chat is unappealing. I just don't like how there chat is set up, it's in the way, and their font is kind of difficult for me.
  • There are mods to change the font.

And on the servers that are up, (in most of them that I saw) you have to read a truckload of signs just to know what to do.
  • Because most of the time they'd rather use signs and not a welcome message (which hasn't been incorporated into Minecraft yet)

And for mods, you have to go into the files (which are in a less convenient location) and you have to open minecraft.jar with winrar or something, and copy files into there, which is a hassle IMO.
  • This is elementary.  It's not that hard.

And you can't change from creative mode, to survival mode. I think that would be very useful a feature.
  • Notch has stated that he has done this to prevent people from cheating, but he also stated that he made it easy for mods to modify whether or not a save file is "Creative" or "Survival", or even "Hardcore".

BTW the full version will likely be the same.

-well I'm not sure how to figure out my server address, or how to port.

-I'll look into the mods, that seems like it'd be something I'd use :D

-I know why they might be doing it, but I want a nice server I can just play and have fun, I don't want to spend all my playtime reading sings. :/

-I know it isn't that hard, but it's still a hassle. And for those who don't know much about computers it's definitely hard.

There's plenty of servers where you only have to read a few signs just to get a improved experience and resistance from griefers.
Although reading them is not required. Much less hard to do.
