So since yesterday was obviously election day, a referendum was introduced that would provide my district with enough money to keep things running remotely smooth as they are now. Things were never great for this school financially, but everybody seems to think this entire town (of about 13,500) just went down the stuffter because this referendum didn't go through.

From what I've heard, it would've gotten money through taxes that went directly into school funds for sports, extracurricular stuff, and whatever else. Unfortunately, since our district has already taken enormous blows from state funding, we still needed more money. It didn't pass and now next year will be cut waaay back to basics.

Choir, most sports, and others have been discontinued for next year, that's a certain. Rumors have been spreading that the cuts will extend to the shops and agriculture departments, meaning we will no longer have Auto Tech, metals or woods shop, or ag class. The teachers will be laid off. Sports might be altogether stopped. Many, many elective classes will be cut - core classes will continue but the rest will be study hall or open-campus study time for seniors. This hasn't been confirmed though, however its a definite possibility.

My shop teacher said he graduated in '77 and the district and this town have just gone downhill ever since. He said the sign has said outside of town that the population has stayed at 13,000 since he was a kid. The percent of households with children used to be around 65% but has dropped to around 20%. We talked in geography how these budget cuts could potentially literally kill our town.

So yeah. Just thought that was interesting and worth sharing. :o

whoa

Wait, if everyone wanted it to pass, why didn't it?

It seems like the entire US education system has been sinking for a while now.

That's what no one seems to understand. Out of around 2000 voters, roughly 320 agreed. My guess is they didn't want additional taxes.

jesus loving christ get the forget out of that hellhole.

This is why I'm displeased with our government.

Sure lets keep giving the politicians big checks and vacations.

What's that?  We need more money?  Alright lets cut education.  Maybe then we can start thinking about how China's brutally enforcing their kids to be on the top edge.

The closest school out of the district is 13 miles or so outside of town, that would kill me. D:

On the other hand I did used to go there. I hated that school.

We also discussed in geography how our town just spent $60,000 buying three news signs to welcome visitors to our town and yet we can't even afford to lend some help to our district.

Imagine our nation as a living thing. Today's politicians are the necrosis rotting it away.

Happened to my district as well. Teachers are going to lose jobs, the transportation syetm is being removed so we have to get to school ourselves (I live five miles away wtf), extra-curricular activities and sports are being cut, electives are being removed so the core classes (history, math, etc.) are going to be about two hours long each.

This blows.

... Yet my school is in great shape with no one being laid off.

Why do these problems never reach me?

Really, the afterschool room has two PS2s, a wii, and an Xbox 360 slim with a kinect. Plus there are iPads for every student in a classroom (about 20 per classroom)

what the forget why

A school closer to the Twin Cities actually invested in getting iPads for every student instead of textbooks. I think it's a brilliant idea but a risky investment, it ended up being over $267,000, but we haven't heard anything negative about it since it was done lol.
