was that even really a vocaloid? sounded more like they added effects to the singer's voice to make it sound kind of like a vocaloid.

G Gundam is probably what you're looking for, it's campy and doesn't necessarily take itself seriously.

If you're talking super-serious self-reflective kind of stuff, Zeta and War in the Pocket.

G Gundam stands on its own. There's several different universes. I had a long-ass post on all of them at one point but I need to find it first.

Different Universes that have nothing to do with each other.
I like the Universal Century Gundams, because they focus on war and show both the main character and little people fighting. I haven't kept up with the series in awhile due to other series. Also muh seriousness.

Its been awhile, but I would watch them in this order these four in this order:
Mobile Suit Gundam
MS 8th Team
0800 War in the Pocket
0083 Stardust Memory

G fighter Gundam is basically a shonen with mechs. People fighting in arenas with mechs. Kind of like Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z.
Wing was pretty popular for its time when it hit the Americas. Never watched it, also a stands alone universe.
