Author Topic: Should I play Half Life 2 if I haven't played the first one.  (Read 4829 times)

The only similarity is the title and the guy in the orange hazmat suit. Change the color of the suit and the guy's face and it would be a completely different game.

lol, hl1 had no real story.
you were a dude wearing power armor, you never talk, and then stuff goes wrong and everything tries to kill you. hl2 introduced a proper plot.
The story for Half-Life was that you were working on a project involving interdimensional portals. The experiment goes wrong and creatures from the other dimension begin pouring into the Black Mesa facility. Then the military shows up to destroy all evidence of the mishap and prevent the aliens from escaping any further. Gordon has to make his way through the facility, fighting aliens and soldiers along the way, to the eponymous Lambda Complex. From there, surviving scientists teleport Gordon to the alien dimension of "Xen", with the mission to destroy the massive Nihilanth which is keeping the portal open.

Keep in mind this game was released only a few years after Doom, whose story was "Demons are invading the Earth, you must fight your way through hell to destroy a goat skull which is keeping the portal open", and yet it's still a more entertaining story than all these military shooters nowadays. Come to think of it, Half-Life's sounds a little similar but I digress.

As ridiculous as Half-Life's plot was was, it was way better than Half-Life 2's, in which a bunch of ridiculously humanoid aliens with no relation to the first game show up on Earth and manage to conquer the entire planet in seven hours, despite possessing such horrible equipment that the remaining troops stationed on earth end up using human weapons anyway. Gordon Freeman, some random-ass scientist, must assist a ragtag band of rebels in doing what the organized and disciplined militaries of the planet couldn't, and overthrow an oppressive interdimensional empire. Also there are headcrabs everywhere and antlions for some reason and I just stopped halfway through because the game couldn't decide if it wanted to be a military shooter, a "bug war" shooter, a zombie shooter, or an alien shooter.

HL2's plot could be simplified to
you were a dude wearing power armor, you never talk, and then stuff goes wrong and everything tries to kill you.
just as easily as the first one, with the sole exception that stuff already went wrong before the game started.

because it's incredibly obvious that they're humans wearing suits, because you see a character take off the mask not even five minutes into the game?
Humans can join the Civil Protection, they're just cops. The combine military forces are alien.

Edit:It's one of the best games (if not the best game) in the eyes of everyone who's not trying to be a hipster and hate it just because it's opinionated as one of the best games.

Why not?
it basically invented the completely linear and scripted shooter and the gunplay is boring as piss (except gravity gun)

MW3 is as linear as it gets and even though Half-Life is pretty linear I am having fun with it and there are times where you have to go back and forth constantly.

You gotta point about that, Half Life makes you scout around for health, ammo, secrets, vantage points, driving a jeep/muscle car/airboat, escaping a zombie town, etc. while MW3 just says: GO HERE AND SHOOT THOSE RUSSIAN MEANIES!

Although Half Life does have some linear parts it isn't just forcing you to go somewhere.

Playing Half Life on hard and I am already up to the green tentacle monster.
Yeah that's easy, that part is where it starts to really suck.

It took me a while to figure out that i have to throw grenades to move the monster's attention away from me.

You're handicapped

that function barely even works :V

What part of "Combine" do you not understand?

Menen I'm pretty sure it is hinted that civil protection is volunteers (or captives) of citizens who want (or are forced) to serve the combine, otherwise it would be impossible for Barney to even get a hold of a suit and fit in with the others.  Theres also tons of fan made things that depict the civil protection being men in suits.  (also, civil protection are the only ones who do jackass things like throw cans on the ground and make you pick them up.  Robots/brainwashed humans are not capable of making jackass decisions, that is something a human abusing power would do, and only a human abusing power would do)

In Nova Prospect you here Two people in the background talking about "Trans Human Soldiers" aka Combines

Obviously Barney doesn't take his mask off or they would figure out hes a spy.

However the Civil Protection is probably human

Half-Life 2 is the linear one
That's part of why I hate it

Half-Life was great, if a little ugly.

I think menen was talking about how saber was implying that all the combine are just humans.

Yes, the Civil Protection is made up of humans. One of the civilian lines (I think from one of the guys at the very beginning when you're about to exit the train station) is something like "I've been thinking of joining the Civil Protection just to get a decent meal."

I also like how HL1 and HL2 are 20 years apart.

AND YOU DONT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED IN THOSE 20 YEARS

no the Civil Protection are humans
Most arent
Only few
EDIT:That was resistance soldier
You would know him from HL1

7 hour war, Combine took over, enslaved peoples, etc.

if you can stand hl1 graphics, then play it

if not: read the wiki for the hl1 story, then play hl2
