Should I play Half Life 2 if I haven't played the first one.

So for the first half hour I am playing Half Life 2 and I have no idea what's going on and I don't know who these people are.

Is it wise to start from Half Life 2 and not the prequel? I don't normally play sequels until I play the prequels first.

Half Life doesn't explain that, Half Life 2 just throws you into a world ruled by Doctor Breen and the Combine without any explanation as to how
