Author Topic: Autism.  (Read 5948 times)

Being defined by something and being characterized by something are two different things, try not to use them in place of the other in future

well that's what I was trying to say anyway
I've heard defined by used in that way a lot though :s

I thought autistic kids are really smart? Just not good with people? Or is that Asperger's? Anyone ever read the book "House Rules" by Jodi Picoult? It's really good.

It's called internet autism.

The dude in the movie Rain Man is Autistic.

Basically throw down say a bunch of marbles in a pile and he will count them all in a second.

example: "Throws down a pile of rocks"

Rain man: Theres exactly 42 rocks.

Though Rain Man isn't smart in some areas I think so it's like your smart with only one subject, I gotta look at this again.

that, my children, is called the downs
My sister has downs. Don't start that stuff dude.

What. I don't even. Never compare the Rain Man movie to people who actually have autism.

It's like comparing charlie and the chocolate factory to a real life factory.

That movie also gave people with autism a bad image. I'm not going to say why because it's obvious.

do you even know what you're talking about

you just made a perfect example of what the OP called out for

No one on this forum is qualified to diagnose anyone with autism so stop trying.

You do realize Rain Man is a true story.

You do realize Rain Man is a true story.

And?

Rain Man isn't a documentary.

Also it's not a true story but the character who has autism was based off a real life person who had quite strong autism.

The fact is people who have autism were often compared to that particular character (and the savant abilities).

There is a massive contrast between people with autism. I've been with people who have severe autism and I've been with people who have much weaker forms.

Rain Man gave only one view of autism and that's how the public took it.

Does this mean I have to stop calling people mondays too?
