You should find out your BMI before trying to lose weight or gain weight through diets.
BMI is complete and utter crap. There are so many things BMI doesn't take into account, which just means it's a rubbish measure of anything.

Im telling you... sammiches. Make a damn good sammich.
Or better yet! Subway or Jimmy Johns...
ohhh. which do you prefer? Subway or Jimmy Johns? :D

Don't do exercises that build muscle mass because that won't help you lose weight.
It's more about what you do than what you eat.
basically just do this

If you really want to lose weight you can try tabata training, if done properly it is incredibly difficult but extremely rewarding.
Basically, for 4 minutes (8 sets) You do sprints such as push ups, Self Delete planks and all the other goodies like loving CRAZY for 20 seconds, then rest for 10 and repeat. Look up a good type of sprint for weight loss but i mostly do push-ups, grasshopper and Self Delete planks. If it doesn't push you to breaking point you're doing it wrong.

Example video- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmJeCyHBvVk it might not look that intense but trust me, it is.

EDIT: also this is NOT an everyday exercise, unless you want to destroy your muscles and stump yourself.

All you need to do to lose weight is cut calories, its the most effective way. It's not really healthy though
