Why is Batman a dark and gritty character now?

What the hell happened? Batman wasn't always like this. :/

I'm pretty sure at one point someone made a comic book that portrayed Batman as less of a boy scout like Superman and more of a gritty antihero. It was pretty much "giving Batman his balls back."
