Author Topic: Thinking of trying martial arts  (Read 1323 times)

If you want to lose weight, I suggest running.
That's what I plan.
Take Brazilian Jujitsu.
Learn to choke people out with your legs :D

Heard good things about this one.
Learn Shaolin.
Why?
I took Tae Kwon Do a year or so ago, but that's mainly for self-defense.
Self Defense is all I really need, but I took one class when I had to wait for him to do the class and the kick-block was bullstuff.
Really just find something you think is fun and interesting. The physical self defense aspects really go to hell once a knife or gun gets involved (protip: if someone pulls a knife on you run away) although being trained in anything is a step up if you're in some fist brawl. Hopefully what you learn from martial arts is how to avoid escalating a situation to any significant violence in the first place.

I started taking martial arts classes when I was 20 and didn't have a problem. If you even take it mostly seriously you'll do well; there are a lot of bozos out there who take a few classes and think they're some sort of master fighter.

Arnis is what I have the most experience with but I've dabbled in other forms last year while exploring. Everything has its pluses and minuses. Everyone can agree that Taekwondo is bullstuff though!  :cookieMonster:
I don't think anyone would try to fight a knife. Of course, martial arts would help my cardio, thus letting me book it faster. I would only use it to stop something from getting further like getting someone in a chokehold, dropping their ass, and running/walking away.
I can see why people would get so excited about taking martial arts, they might get carried away.
Don't use a gym for treadmills, go outside for a walk and use your gym time for strength building.

For martial arts, I've done shaolin kungfu for a while and I absolutely love it, so I recommend that. It's basically up to you though, anything you find interesting/cool is a winner. I got into kungfu because of the buddhist background and history behind it.
It's pretty cold out and my dad smokes around me, so I am a stuffty runner, but walking should be fine.

Gonna check out Shaolin Kungfu.
I do karate. but choose whichever you want .

just don't think you will be able to beat people up whenever you want
I don't want to beat people up, but if some kid starts it I will fight back.
Is karate legit? It's thrown around so much I think it might just be not as good.

If you got the money, I highly recommend Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I'm with Gracie Barra, and BJJ is the best in terms of grappling. Muay Thai is the best in terms of striking, but it is loving rough. Everything else is pretty much useless when compared to those two.

EDIT: Join your high school wrestling team if you are looking to lose weight.
Yeah, hearing it more and more now.
Not in high school yet. (8th)
I did Karate in like first grade and I hated it. :cookieMonster:
I was pretty lazy when I was younger. I ditched piano, sort of regret it but it's only 15 feet away from my desk, I could go back whenever I want.
Ive been taking Taekwondo since I was 5, and I'm still interested in it. Martial Arts is a good thing to take up.
I wish my mom enrolled me in martial arts. Even taekwondo, I saw some people getting dropped so it can't be all useless.

It was snowing the other day and I went out running. No excuses.

So what, just jog comfortably for 30 minutes?
I guess I can do that.

I wish I was as buff as you. :(

It works. For like 2 months every day I would only eat a very light dinner and in Gym I would run the track every day, all class long. It built up my stamina too. I lost like 20 pounds. It was crazy bro. Then I moved back and my coach won't allow that and my mom likes to cook fatty foods. I gained the weight back. :c
EDIT: 7000th post. :o

Used to do martial arts but almost everything they teach you can only be used in tournaments or against people who have learnt the same things, if you were getting mugged and tried a move they would easily beat you. Also going to the gym for treadmills, or just not pay anything and jog/run places? It's the same but you get scenery and it costs nothing.

I took kenpo karate for about a year when I was like 13 just because I wanted some kind of sport/activity and I don't like most sports besides I've always liked fighting but I tend more towards grappling/choking anyway it was fun

I go out at 5-6 AM when it is still extra cold too. If you've never done running for significant periods of time you should mix walking and jogging until you're up to speed. Like any physical activity it's easy to get injured doing too much too fast. Knee injuries are the stuffiest things ever.

I tried jogging once.
My dad insisted he would go so I had to catch up with him. stuffty regimen.
I will go alone.

Riding bikes can be good too, especially if you have a speedy magiger. You can go a lot further and faster and you get to enjoy all the scenery, i go on long rides all the time. c:
