Author Topic: The Settlers  (Read 2302 times)

(And previous iterations, but the description below applies to S7, unless otherwise noted.)
Anyone mind providing a better trans, please?

Description
The Settlers is about managing a city (each game has a theme, for example "Veni, Vidi, Vici" (S2) is roman-styled and "HeriItage of Kings" and "Rise of an Empire" (S5 and S6, respectively) are medieval-styled). And waging war against enemy cities.
You manage this city by building buildings. You both need gathering buildings (place these to exploit natural resources), storehouses (everyone walks to and from these with their resources, so place these near the gatherers) and processing buildings (place these near the storehouses near the gatherers providing the needed resources). Later on you can also build "special" buildings.

There are 4 special buildings:
  • Constructors
    • When you try to build something the nearest free constructor comes. Having one of these nearby therefore speeds up building (it also means you can build more stuff at the same time).
  • Church
    • Allow you to train clerks
      • Spend these on research
  • Trading post
    • Allow you to train traders
      • Use these to trade (duh)
  • Barracks
    • Allows you to train soldiers
      • FIIIIIIGHT!!!

I don't see how in all these "controlling a kingdom" type of games.
Why can a person not multi-task and has to be one loving thing

I used to play Settlers: HOK for ages when I had the demo version. I do in fact have the full version now but it doesn't install properly on my laptop and my stupid PC is too slow.

It's a great game but it's very similar to all the other 'vaguely-recent' RTSes like AoE3 which I've exhausted.

Compared to a game like Sid Meier's Civ, what are the pros and cons? This looks kind of fun.

Sorry, but no idea as I've never played Civ.

I haven't played settlers, but I can tell its definitely different from civ. Civ games have you operating on a city to city type of system. While this game looks more like it operates on a building to building basis. Similar to how Warcraft or Starcraft play, as far as building up the town goes.

Thank you, I removed the aggressiveness from my post in exchange. :P

Haha. They are pretty similar though, or at least as close as a turn-based board game version can realistically be.
