Author Topic: Game companies don't know what 'true' fear is - What would scare you stuffless?  (Read 5138 times)

what scares me is when it's completely quiet and then all hell breaks loose and there's absolutely loving nothing you can do about it while you watch stuff go down.

dead space?

dead space?
exactly
i watched my friend play that and i was just about jumping out of my loving seat.

I think Minecraft does a good job to scare you.
1. There's a much bigger risk to dying in Minecraft than in other games (since you can lose all the items you have on you)
2. stuff comes out of nowhere and wants you dead
3. You can be a long way from home and a long way from help (sitting at the bottom of the map and getting swarmed by monsters)

Most games, even though they are eerie and things pop out at you, you can't really be that afraid. If something happens the first time and you die, you now have knowledge as to what awaits you after the reload.

- Make room completely black
- Open up game
- Sheep run about on screen
- Sheep suddenly turn into zombies and a giant mutilated head pops up on the screen with realistic detail.

So much this, makes me jump everytime it happens even with skeletons.

Nightmare House 2 + Minecraft = Things simply appearing in caves suddenly, cave exits suddenly disappearing, Creepers jumping through windows.

Isn't just turning round after happily crafting a gold sword and then seeing a creeper at the window in the dark enough to make you jump a little? If one actually came through the window I'd have a heart attack.

endercreepers?
that would be incredible..

Caves changing shape as you explore, things appearing suddenly around you, people hanging from cave walls. The caves would no longer be as safe as they were with your armor and sword...

I get scared when I don't know what is going to happen next. Like rounding a corner, or something.

Better yet, you should always hear noises ALWAYS behind you.

as many have said, A feeling of pure Helplessness really amps up fear levels. It's deeply rooted i the human subconscious- when we can't do anything, we are scared. also, things like the scissorman's snip snip or the creepy violins associated with the creatures in amnesia and the insanity they cause- sound cues are a great way to put someone on edge, because they don't know WHERE the enemey is, they just know it is there.

Older games before ambient lighting, where a flashlight was literally just a circular light object at the first solid object directly in front of the player, therefore limiting their range of sight greatly.

Jump scares are loving terrifying, are you guys nuts?!
Penumbra wasn't scary at all once you saw that you were just fighting really loud dogs - however, Amnesia did a good job with helplessness.
Clock Tower is loving stupid imo. (that is, in the sense of scariness. It's a cool story, don't get me wrong.)
If the graphics aren't realistic, I can't get immersed, and I won't be scared.
Minecraft is laughable.

There needs to be stuff that actually gets to peoples heads though, like the feeling that somethings watching you the whole game, like a black figure that's in some of levels but hard to see, but when you do you can't stop noticing it.
