How do you get iridium crystals or c-store credits?
You can get Dilithilum (That's what you mean by iridium right?) from certain missions. And you can buy c-credits with refined dilithilum or real money (From the Dilithilum Exchange or the C-Store respectively)

It's good for beginners and Engineers as they are a balanced type of ship. Tactical officers will want to keep on the escort track as science will want to use science.

What can you do with dilithium crystals? They're just sitting in my inventory right now. How much time does it take to save up for a new ship?

You can exchange Dilithium for Cryptic Points.
