I want to try it before I buy it, but I can't find a link for it on steam. Any other place I could get it? I know they made one.

Nope.

L4D is better than L4D2 but the community died down after the sequel was released.

They cancel the demo when they release the game.
Unless you have a timetravel machine back to November 17th 2009 or earlier, nope.

I think they have a demo of it on Xbox 360 somewhere.

There are currently only demos for either of the consoles, any other Demos are considered pirated or otherwise illegal material.
