Sonic still belongs to SEGA. So does Solid Snake. Also, just because you appear on a Nintendo console does not mean you belong to Nintendo.

Let me rephrase: I don't think it would even cross Nintendo's mind to ask Valve if they could put Freeman in SSB4. And, honestly, Valve would probably say yes.
