Author Topic: Should I get Mass Effect 2 before 1?  (Read 1076 times)

I tried the ME 2 demo and I loved it, but I haven't played the first one. Would I be completely lost in the story if I don't play 1 first? Is there any differences between 1 and 2?

I'd say buy ME1 first. In my opinion you would be quite lost on the story if you haven't played the first game.

Plus if you make the righ choices in ME1 you can have good outcomes in ME2.

No. 2 sets you out on a quest almost entirely unrelated to the first, with the only connection being that Shepard wants to kill the reapers. Yeah some references are made to the past game but it's never a situation where you needed to have played it.

1 was an RPG with shooter elements, 2 was a shooter with RPG elements.
Also 2 was stupid and it felt like it accomplished very little.

Barely.

Is ME1 free roam like Fallout 3[big map to roam around] or more like borderlands or bioshock[big map but not the full game map all at once]?

Neither game is open world. You are transported to large individual areas where you free to roam.

If you want a full understanding of the events in the second game, you will need to play the first one. There's only so much the wiki pages can tell you that doing it yourself won't accomplish better. It makes it more personal. It gets you into seeing who the characters are and understand their motives. It's essential for understanding. however, if you like it just for the gameplay and not storyline, then get 2 first. But you're missing out if you do. Both games are fun in their own way. But that's my opinion.

Can I turn evil in Mass Effect or do I have the be the righteous space paladin?

You can go either way. I love that option as I have two characters. One is an starfish while the other is a goodie two shoes. I play them based on my mood that day. Very nice.

wait for Mass effect 3! :D

You can't be evil in Mass Effect. You can either be the good guy or the good guy who acts kind of like a jerk. The end result of each play style is the same with the only difference being whether you piss off Inconsequential Character A or Inconsequential Character B.

The big decisions you make in Mass Effect 1 receive no more than a short cut scene or line of dialogue in the second game. Outside of that they have absolutely no effect on the story.

Letting the council die could be considered an act of evil...or pure indifference. If you played the game as a humanist, it would be considered a racial hate crime to allow them to die.

On a different note, lookie what I got in the mail this week!

I think Mass Effect 2 has slightly better gameplay. I played ME2 before ME, and I don't believe it spoils anything major. (Spoilers: You defeat the primary and early-established antagonist in Mass Effect). If you're a fan of third person, cover based shooting games, go for ME. If you're not sure, ME2 may be better for deciding whether you like the series.
