I don't know who your "connections" are but Anonymous is not one closely-knit group. It's a bunch of random people on the Internet who call themselves Anonymous because it makes them feel special.
The groups your "connections" are in may not be planning something, but other groups or individuals going under the name "Anonymous" could be.

okay, here we go with a case of 'i know everything' disorder, first of all anonymous IS a knit group and they associate via several IRC's and the deep net (Tor and whatnot) and better yet they even let some pawns on the IRC channel help with LOIC (low altitude ion cannon; ddos software) and if anyone isn't part of anonymous and is doing freelance hacking and claiming themselves as 'anonymous' then that is a different case.
