Xbox live/Saints row 2 question

Yesterday I was playing Saints Row 2 and someone named vxVanquiser(I think that was their name) joined. It played online just like it normally would, the person had a healthbar over their character and it showed as my follower and stuff and they even left/reconnected to me. But the weirdest thing is... I have a free xbox live membership. I thought you had to have gold to play online with people. How is it that in my recent players list it shows 2 people I "met" in Saints Row 2 when I don't have gold membership? I don't even remember the second player on the list. I just verified earlier today I have a free membership and didn't somehow get gold. So how did the other player connect to me?
