I'd like to point something out
http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?board=26.0
Mapping is so glitchy and difficult that it needs its own board for help. Maybe using terragen would be a good thing instead.

/Agreed, I completely hate the idea of not having any interiors/terrain, I mean if it was possible to do the shadows/shaders with terrain, it would be a lot better of an idea

It would probably be possible if they spent 18 months re-coding the game engine. When badspot created the game using an engine from 2001, he was set with Blockland since 2004 up until now and even a couple more years to come. But some day updating will be required, if he upgrades now or sooner than he will be set for all the years the old engine gave him and A LOT more. Plus we could probably keep shadows and terrain, look at the terrain the new torque engine supports.

I wasn't sure at first but I think it's a good thing. We're not just getting shadows and shaders, it'll be easier to update the game and much more

To the haters:

Every time there is an update there's always a few laggards who think the old way was better.  They blindly argue against change.  Well guess what friends: the reason we don't live in loving caves today is because people like you lost that argument every generation over and over for the last 400,000 years.  You would stymie all of civilization for your own pathetic power trip.  You are nothing but a human speed bump.

Here's a taste of cold reality: When people are free to host their own servers, they probably won't join yours.  That's because you're an starfish.  The only reason people ever tolerated you was because they simply had no other choice.  Your power monopoly is gone.  Social adeptness and creativity are the new measures of success.  You will not be able to succeed in the new order because you do not possess either of these qualities.

Will re-post here.

V21, you're either with it or you didnt bother reading any of the topic and as such are super confused

Because working for months on a project just to have it flushed away makes you confused.

Terrain was already horrible and I am glad that shadows are replacing it. Only problem is, GSF Ghost will be less known, which sucks.

I don't use terrain maps a lot anyway.

I'm alright with the new shadows and lighting.

New shadows and lighting are a step forward.
Terrains and interiors were fun while they lasted, but they were an obstacle to the progress of Blockland. I will, indeed, miss flying around on slopes, or jumping off the bed and spamming the printer, but these new shadows will make the blow far less painful.

v21? what the hell blockland is staying on v20

that is what the launcher is for. duh

Shadows update.
Unless this is just me being too serious.

Yeah of course I know, but where the hell does it say "v21 update! Shadows & Shaders!"

I don't want the shaders. Just because it looks nice doesn't mean its absolutely essential to a game. Without terrain/interiors the game would loose it's "shine," if you will, for many people. The main focus of Blockland is building, which is the only reason I can think of for having this, to force the way you play the game. Instead of being able to build where ever you want from maps such as Emerald Isle 4, Slate Paradise, or The Wastes, just to name a few, you would have to build on a flat, never changing surface that just gets boring have looking at it for a few seconds.
Most servers these days don't have anything to do with serious building and rely mostly on terrain/interior maps and span over a great length of the map. Having to build all of that terrain and making it look good would take forever and the player can't get from point A to point B smoothly unless you use ramps, which would make the terrain look ugly, or you use 1x bricks which would just take to long. Terrain/interiors also add a mood from the textures and lighting, something not achievable with bricks.
One thing I love about terrain is finding a hill, putting some cubes down, and building a base. Without terrain one would have to first build the hill and make sure there is room enough for the floor for the base. Then they would build the base. This just adds an unneeded step and many people aren't good with terrain, but great with stuff like exterior. The outside of a build, like the terrain, adds as much to a build as the interior and being unable to build terrain outside of the build would make most builds just look ugly.

I understand that the terrain and interiors can't cast shadows, but can't we at least have just bricks casting shadows while still having terrain/interiors not cast shadows? It might not look the great, but for an option that you can just turn off anyway I think it would be good enough, at least until they can figure out a way to make terrains/interiors cast shadows or have some sort of public brick terrain generation.

derp
strongly agree with this.
but V21 will get me back to building. i actually NEVER build. just join servers that amuse me.
