Author Topic: The future of Blockland  (Read 28472 times)

If badspot didn't want terrain and interiors, he shouldn't have introduced them in the first place.

Everything you said up until this quote were legitimate points. However, this is just stupid. Terrains and interiors were originally introduced to help populate a game with a relatively low brick count. When Retail was released, the features were transfered over because he had no reason not to add them. Since that time however, Badspot has complained about different issues concerning these features that bar him from implementing new features, which in itself is enough of a reason to remove them.

While it is sad we will be losing a fairly large chuck of our modding community due to this update, mapping was never a promised feature of the game. Blockland is the game where you build things using it's brick system. And he has decided that improved graphics will benefit the promised features.

What i'm trying to say is that Badspot basically got us modders hooked on creating mods with maps, and now he thinks he can just completely destroy everything us modders have worked for.  He should know that since he was the one that allowed us to create maps, he would have a problem like this when he tried to remove them.  He should have known that all of the modders would raise hell.  And just think, he's completely getting of all of the user-made maps, just for some shadows and shaders.

What would you rather have, pretty little shadows or all of the user-made maps.

Enjoy riding a jeep on a blank slate.

You know, it's really hard for most of you guys to understand how me and Jorgur feel.  I highly doubt that most of you have put years into developing great RPGs that rely on terrain and interiors.  And now v21 will take our hard work an basically destroy it.  You must understand, it takes years to develop these mods.  We have spent days on end reforming our code and scripting these RPGs.  The feeling that all of your hard work for the past few years will go down the drain is just horrific.
If your RPG relies on terrain then you should take a serious moment to realize that your code is terrible. If it can't support built terrain, then you should down right redo it. I'd also like to point out just because you spent "years" working on your "RPG" doesn't mean that the game shouldn't progress. And the fact that your now complaining about mods that rely on things made in 2002 is sad. Get up to date guys, if you want your RPGs to be good, learn how to make your bots loving jump over terrain bumps. Maybe take a few weeks to make AI's not loving handicapped.

I've decided to stop arguing with your refusal to read.
Hes not giving up interiors/terrains just for shadows/shaders.
He specifically said that interior/terrains complicate code, and removing it will allow them to push out more features/better fixes.
If you be a ignorant prick about this we will just ignore you. At least read before you post.

This has been said multiple times in this thread: This updates isn't just for shadows, it will make adding more features that wouldn't be possible otherwise much easier, and hopefully some decent vehicle collision.

And that video in the OP is a joke, this isn't the end of the whole damn game. This whole thing has been blown out of proportion.

Maybe you didn't catch it, but I'm not stupid enough to make my script rely on the terrain.  What I'm trying to say is that stonequest and all the other RPGs that use maps will just not be the same without their maps.  It has nothing to do with bad ai or bad scripting.

You now have to actually WORK ON THE BUILD, there for you can add things like caves and stuff.

You're being a baby about it. Badspot didn't get you hooked on creating mods with maps. In fact, mapping wasn't originally available in Retail. It's the community who got you hooked. I'm sure he and kompressor realized that you'd throw a fit, and frankly, they don't care. They have your $20, if you don't like the changes and leave, they wouldn't miss you.

Like I said before, I am sad that those features are being removed. The Bedroom is my favorite map and holds a lot of nostalgia for me. I'll miss Fortwars on the Slopes as well as the random races in GSF_Paradise. However, I'm not complaining about the loss of these things because I'm able to look up and see what changes are in store for us in addition to "just for some shadows and shaders." Terrain and Interiors were causing Badspot and kompressor a ton of issues implementing new features to better the community. Better vehicle collision is one of these features.

So yes, I guess I will enjoy my Jeep ride on Slate, over a terrain made of bricks.

A few other people beat me too it.

and that is obviously a severe restriction on our creative ability.
I do not understand where you guys argue this point, but I've been seeing it a lot.

How the flying forget is having to create everything a restriction on your creativity???  That's handicapped.  You are in FULL creative control, how have we lost ANY creative ability?

ITT: Chao is a moron who doesn't understand that you can still use .dts shapes to make a map.

So we're losing the one aspect to the game that was probably the least enjoyed as a whole, which is RPs.

Heavens, what shall we do?

And besides, forget interiors and exteriors. Whenever we wanted to get some serious building done, we always did it on a slate map because we're building with blocks on a grid. We needed a flat surface else we'd have buried bricks. This game is about building things and making things, not worrying about if there are hills or not. If your RP can't be transferred to a terrain-less environment then that's sad and I'm sorry, but I have been waiting for shadows for five damn years, be loving damned you and your RPs.

Can't build on static shapes.

Can't build on static shapes.
This is my only concern. I hope someone can make a terragen that makes smoother terrain.

Can't build on static shapes.
I imagine a workaround could be made.

I imagine a workaround could be made.
That has no thought put into it. If static shapes could be built on, it would become an interior.
