Author Topic: Being a musician.  (Read 1621 times)

The more I think about things, the more I want to be a musician. I do all I can to play music as much as possible, but...it's part my parents, and part the unlikelihood of it all that's holding me back.

I have huge commitments to doing well in school, and my parents have expectations of me (and they insist that even if I make it in a band, I need a college education). Which is fine and all, I just want that experience of touring, of making more music, of recording stuff, of having fun with my band and just...idk, I just wanted to discuss it with you guys.

Here's a list of everything I've done music related to work towards getting my band to be successful:

-Drumming for jazz band at school
-Drumming for steel drum band when they need me
-Drumming for musical at a theatre, for a show called Urinetown
-Drumming for a metal band called Putrid lair (kinda falling apart)
-Drumming for my primary band called The Jalapenos

Basically, my main interest is in the Jalapenos. I have so much fun jamming with those guys, and we're starting to play more and more shows. On Saturday night I played a gig at an uber modern coffeehouse type place and had a 2 hour set which was awesome, that was with 2/3 of the band (me and our bassist, who also plays guitar and does his own music stuff independent of the group). As temp manager of the band I also booked us to play a big school event called Relay For Life (look it up, lol), we're also playing Electric Lunch (our school will feature student talent at some lunches to perform) and most importantly, at a place called The Mix Tavern in south Seattle. We're just opening but it's a good venue and maybe we'll get some exposure.

I really want something great to happen for us :| discuss things I guess, I really just wanted to share this with you all. Bottom line is, I want the group to go somewhere. I want to have a big impact on people and I figure I have a good enough start playing music and putting my all into every song I bang out on the drums.

can we hear some of your music?

can we hear some of your music?

I have a youtube channel that I post about here a lot, that's here. And the Jalapenos have one song up (it's not that great) but you can hear it on the facebook page I set up for us. Check it here: clicky.

I appreciate people like you.

As a piano/keyboardist/bassist, I can say it's refreshing to hear people like you say that.  I encourage you to follow your dreams.  You'll go places man.

Do it and in X years go on tour and send me free tickets.

I aspire to be a Composer, along with a cartoonist, comedian, graphic artist.

Your parents are right about the education thing. As successful as your band is, make sure you get an education. All bands die at some point, most sooner than others, so it'll be a good thing to have when looking for a job.

For sure. I have an interest in computers, given I've already had the privilege of working in the tech office at my school. It was a great experience and gave me a little direction. So that's something to look into, but like I said...I really want the experiences that come with being a great band. Having people love your music, having people know who you are, getting to see the world and getting to have the world hear everything I have to offer.

Although I haven't made much impact so far, musically, I built up my skill in drumming all by myself...self-taught, just playing to music I love and I get better every day. It gives me a sense of accomplishment in a sense, that I've turned something I did when I was bored into a small part-time career while I do school. I hope it grows :) so much...

there's probably more short-lived bands then there are long-lived ones, right?

Lol, this happens sometimes.

I meant to say that most bands have short lifespans.

I dont know If I read over it, its late out but,
do you play piano?

Not too much anymore, but I took lessons for 8 years and even though I don't play much anymore I really value the knowledge I got out of it. Key signatures, melody, knowing note names, knowing chords, all that good stuff.

You can do it bro, I've heard some of your drumming and it sounds very good. Orange Blossoms sounds alright as well, I like the singer's voice.

Good luck. :)

(Also if your band is interested in making some metal, please do. ;D)
