Okay, I've just about had enough with today's society. I remember that society growing up was so much different. Here we go on what may be a mega-rant, but I just need to let all of this go. I need to vent, and state why I think society has gone into a state of disrepair. Here we go.
Whole thing here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_EXjwKQNKvhpy4f2TbO_bvo33WfjQhR-XKqf2Rn4GcA/editPart 1: Childhood
I remember when I was little, life was pretty simple. I'd go to school, come home, /maybe/ watch some Nickelodeon (because it was actually good), and I'd walk over to a friend's house and we'd do things that, at the time, were awesome. We would take crayons and draw out movies of what would happen if Power rangers fought a Pikachu. We would build things, whether it was a simple pillow fort to hold off the impending mutant invasion, or a semi-complex wooden machine that would draw different shapes (in purple felt-tipped marker <3) based on what gears you put into it. We would also walk down to this little creek near my house, where we would go fishing. It was something straight out of the Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. We'd walk down to the creek, no socks or shoes, and we'd sit down on the side and sit and catch some fish. If I had one wish, it would be to have another childhood. It was amazing, and I was so much more carefree then than I am now. I didn't have a stick up my ass, and I didn't have to worry about anything.
So, being the oldest non-old person on my street, I have to watch my neighbor's children all of the time. They range in age from four to twelve, and there's three of them. When I have to watch them, it's not a "put them to bed and do whatever you want" job. I get out of school at around noon, because I took so many AP courses in Freshman and Sophomore years, and I have free periods from noon on. My school, thank god, lets students leave if they have a situation like this and they can drive themselves. So pretty much ever day, I do my work at home with the four year old, and then I have to get my neighbor's children off of the bus (the ones that go to school) and make sure they don't get raped by the one million child enthusiasts that live on my tiny street of four houses.
When we go back to their house (their parents work and don't get home until 5 in the afternoon), I have the wonderful job of keeping them entertained for a few hours, on weekends for much of the day. So, of three children, two of them are 10, and both of them have an iPhone 4S. They sit down and pull out their phones, which makes the task of getting them to do their homework done exceedingly difficult. They text, and make youtube videos, and go on facebook, and do a lot of other stuff. These activities are apparently are endorsed by their parents and let them be "creative". I can't do much about this, because they are allowed to do that on the condition that their homework is done.
Let's stop right here. When I was their age, we had paint, paper, imagination, and a river. They have iPhones, tumblr, Facebook, and youtube. I'm sure a lot of you don't respect me, but hear me out when I say that although I'm not opposed to technology, these girls are way too young to be doing these things. I'm not going to use myself as an example of a perfect human, but you get the point. In this case, I'm really dissapointed about how imagination has turned into technology.
Here we go with part two.
Part 2: Idolization
Idols have existed in society for as long as society has existed. Society and idols go hand in hand. First, we had religion, which created idols for us. Everyone's perception of who is an "Idol" will be different. But my definition of "Idol" is "a person who is admired for exceptional traits, one who is to be imitated". I remember that my idol used to be Jaromir Jagr. I always wanted to play hockey like him. I never played hockey for very long, because I'd switched to lacrosse. But I admired him for the fact that he was a respectable person who was commited to doing something and doing it right.
Society now will not let you pick idols, but now will pick idols for you. This really does bother me. Remember when shows on Nickelodeon taught some sort of life lesson? Be nice to others, sharing is caring, etc? Nickelodeon has turned into mindless entertainment. The majority of television has, with the exception of History channel (H is for Riddler), Discovery channel, and a few others.
Here's where we get to idols. Think of the most obnoxious television show to be invented. If you thought of Jersey Shore, you win $1 million in imaginary monopoly money. A "reality" program about oranges with roid rage who are always getting up in each others' stuff to piss other people off. The women on that show are no better. They're all sluts who apparently want to give as many people herpes as possible. My neighbor once told me "I want to be pretty like Snooki." I almost died on the spot. She's 10, and she thinks that Snooki is a person to be imitated. No, just no.
Television isn't the only one guilty of this. The music industry is also to blame. What happened to songs about true love, happy days, or even using actual instruments? The last one might be a personal issue, but let's have some quotes from some of today's most informative music; "I wanna take a ride on your disco stick", "Boys tryin' to touch my junk, junk, Gonna smack him if he getting too drunk, drunk". Really? I can remember listening to Marty Robbins, Buddy Holly, the Beatles, Bing Crosby, the Chordettes, and many more. They did not pull any of the above horsestuff. Today's music industry makes me want to cringe, with the themes in songs that are played on the radio, loud and clear for everyone to hear.
I need to stop writing now before my head explodes with rage, expect a part 3. You don't have to agree with me, because this is my opinion.
Discuss today's society.
Quote of the threadOne time someone asked me at school why I never get in relationships. I said because I don't want to love someone for only a week just to be cool. I also hate how popular kids at my school treat smart kids like morons even though there intelligence level is the size of a walnut.
