Terraria - Hell - How to know when ready for hell?

I've been playing a lot of Terraria recently and I dug to hell.  Is there a way to know when I'm ready to explore hell? (world is either medium or large)

I don't understand what you mean by "Gold is terrible when you get far." Do you mean when I get to hell or before hell?

You need at least Shadow Scale armor, Jungle armor or Necro armor, an obsidian skull and probably rocket boots or a grapple. Or both.

Maybe some obsidian skin potions too if you have them, they are great protection from lava.

I have shadowscale and obsidian skull and spectre boots and grappling hook.
I keep getting pwned by demons, fire imps, slimes, or hellbats.

As long as you are quick on your feet(or keys?), you can beat him easily.

Seriously? The rock level of the underground jungle is harder than the dungeon to me.

Get meteor armor before you explore hell

and dont even think about trying the wall of flesh before you have a good minishark, a huge, really long bridge, and hell armor.
