Author Topic: Object Sounds  (Read 1116 times)

Well right now I must say the game is pretty quiet unless there's guns being fired, I think it would be cool if Vehicles, players, and other objects had quiet ambient sounds.

Vehicles have been given sounds in the past, but they were usually incredibally annoying.  Vehicle sounds would be nice if they only played while driving and they were quiet.  A nice quiet hum of a vehicle would be nice.

I have also always thought player's should have footstep sounds.  Some people might argue this is also annoying, but seriously?  Every single game I've ever played has footstep sound effects and I've never once been annoyed by it.

I also think there should be more quiet ambient sound effects available for the music brick.  Right now people only use the music brick to play handicapped pop loops, and it's just useless trash.

I agree with this. I've used my own ambient sound effects for a while now, but it would be nice if there were some sort of default ambiance for the music brick. i.e. birds, outdoorsy, night, crows, woods, cave, etc.

Or it could be simplified down to light, neutral, and dark ambient themes for the music brick.

Footsteps would be nice, though they would have a considerable effect on player detection, as in DMs. perhaps if it could be toggled
Or better yet, make crouching silent.

I like the concept. Someone should put some serious thought into doing this.

Playertypes CAN have footstep sounds coded in, you know.
Though yes, the ambient music bricks music would be nice.

The silent crouching idea is nice, but you'd probably be surprised how little it'd detect.  Every other video game has foot step sounds don't they?  I've never found someone just based on their footstep sounds ever.  Most people just don't have the hardcore focus to hear footsteps and instantly find someone based on that.

there isn't a head bob thing in game, is there? cause I like that
also I hate how everything has to be a player type for when you want it to be only first person or no jump or whaeva

Did you post in the wrong thread? lol

well you said so many things and then footstep sounds so I was like head bob and first person

Torque has default support for footstep and plenty other player sounds, but as far as I can tell, the default player is not set up to use them. I haven't investigated too heavily (by which I mean all I've done is notice the textbox while playing around in tree and set them to the sound of a tankshell exploding in hopes of doing something funny.), but if I haven't overlooked a setting in the datablock somewhere, it's either something with the model or with the engine. I'd bet it's the latter.

It also has some impact sounds, but the player is not set up to use those properly either, since it cannot differentiate between a hard impact and a soft one, so jumping plays the same sound as slamming into the floor at terminal velocity.

There are plenty other fields too, like vehicle engine and movement noises, which were utilized in Tribes 2, underwater breathing sounds, shallow water footstep sounds, decals for footprints, and different sounds for walking on metal and snow.

As far as I can tell, none of them work.

Yes, I also think that the gun sounds should be lowered a bit in comparison to everything else.

Damnit someone needs to fix that.
Hmmm...
If it's a problem with the model, someone could just grab the default player model and tweak it so it can work properly. Engine noises can be simulated in similar ways to the way helicopters make noise, and you might be able to find a hacky workaround to the footsteps etc. problem and the shallow water thing.

Oh lol,  I understand now :P

Head bob would be pretty cool too

-snip-
Sounds like something Badspot would be able to implement somewhat easily, right?   Golly gee, that'd be quite an addition to v21 along with shadows and shaders.  Just a big ol' update full of lovey realism

As far as I know guns are damn loud because they're guns.

This would be a nice addition to blockland, but they added head bobbing I sure hope they add an option to turn it off because I think its annoying. In real life your head doesn't bob 10 feet up and down when you walk.

I'm sure it would be an option
