nasa made a way to automatically treat it, but i don't think it's a proper cure, just automatic insulin application.
If those researchers searched/found a cure sooner, perhaps Edd would have had a better chance of surviving
fortunately / unfortunately (ymmv - putting drugs on the market without sufficient testing could be disastrous), most treatments go through at
least one decade of testing before it becomes available to the market. that's why you see so many claims of miracle cures that are never heard from again - they're in testing.
