The friends list stores IDs, and could connect to the Master Server which appears to have a name to ID to key integrity checker and get the list of names from there.

That's a good idea.
Maybe there could also be a point of getting an achivement, instead of "I HAVE ALL THE ACHIVEMENTS I WIN!"
