Author Topic: 0x10c - Notch's New Game!  (Read 34002 times)

Im not really interested. Could someone tell me tl:dr?

Rather then making his own game Notch should take his buckets of money and throw them at Rodina.

Edit: I have a hard loving time believe Notch isn't ripping off Rodina.

tbh even if he is ripping off Rodina... sure it's really douchey, but who cares? it's not like he's stealing their code or anything. if he does it better, great. if they do it better, great.

It's like EA coming in and stealing an idea from a small indie company and stomping them into the ground.

no
notch isn't stomping anyone into the ground... the worst he could possibly be doing is stealing an IDEA, not code, not models, nothing except an IDEA. at the worst. in which case these people making Rodina could sue him. But they won't, because there's no way to prove he stole anything.

and no one has any obligation to "play nice" with indie devs, if they want to make games they have to compete in the market just like everyone else.

What does this have anything to do with them being annoying.

Explain it. I dare you.
Err wrong
"These guys have been working on a game similar to 0x10c. I was not aware of them. Play both? :D http://www.elliptic-games.com/index.shtml" Lies.

According to the FAQ of Rodina.

Are you aware that Notch is already making a very similar game?
Ugh, yes. Imagine my surprise when, after years of thinking about this game and months of working on it, after investing money and time, the most famous independent developer alive announces that his next game sounds very similar to mine. I still feel sick thinking about that moment.

It got worse. It turned out that many of the features I thought would differentiate my game (ship interiors, seamless planet landings, emulated computers for hacking and programming) are features that Notch is also putting into his game. In particular, the fact that he was including simulated computers was very difficult to read. I had hoped that the ability to hack and reprogram the computers in Rodina would make it truly unique. I knew after that moment that my game wasn't going to be innovative, as I'd hoped, but rather it was going to be derivative. Great minds think alike, eh?

The good news is- competition can be a good thing. Now I have to work that much harder to make my game the best it can be. Notch's game looks great so far, and it looks pretty different from Rodina, though I'm trying to avoid following his progress too closely. Additionally, since learning about Rodina Notch has been extremely gracious about acknowledging the game. I'm sure that the games will each have their own approaches, and as we all know, implementation is everything. Either way, fans of the genre can only benefit from more games being made! I know I'm looking forward to playing Notch's game!

Cool, I'll definitely play Rodina as soon as the earliest build is released.

Yeah I'm very interested in Rodina as well. It looks more promising so far.
