Author Topic: Let's all tell each other what we love or hate to see in a Blockland DM.  (Read 2555 times)

I've been seeing a lot of sub-standard DMs in Blockland recently. Many of them have purchasable weapons that really ruin the game for me. How am I to take on someone with a pistol or a combat knife if they have a bloody rocket launcher? And on the other hand, what challenge is there to fighting people with a rocket launcher when all they have are combat knives?

I've other issues as well. For now, discuss what you like or don't like in Blockland's DMs.

ridiculously tight weapon select forcing

in other words, dms that have exactly one kind of weapon: bonus points if it's a loving knife

dms that pride themselves on being all about 'all skill' instead of being 'all fun'

Dislike:
1. When the maps are horribly asymmetrical, in the sense of:
"Ok ok, u guiz get dz tower. N' we'd get all dis covar dawon here n' dis cannon...kk gogo".

2. When people mix guns that use ammo/reloading, with guns that just use reloading, with guns that don't use either.
Same goes for some snipers having head shot and some not having head shot.

3. Giving me all these weapons to use and only one in my inventory is worth using.

4. When the maps are too god damn small.

5. When the maps are too god damn BIG!

6. I'm not really a fan of the "buy weapons" thing, 'cause people never do it right. Like the 'best' weapon will be somewhere in the middle range of the buyables, while the endgame
one sucks. (Don't make the endgame the 'best' anyhow)

7. When the server ping is over 400 and jumping. :c

8. When the spawning is terri-bad. Easy base/spawn camping.

Like:(These are more suggestions rather than what I like in tdm's that I've seen)

1. When the starting weapons, buyable/upgrade weapons, classes make sense. (If you do buyable weapons, just make the buyable ones
different from the starting ones to suit different play styles, not necessarily better)

2. Maps are the right size, symmetric isn't too important but it's usually preferred. Try to balance it out in another way if you need to.
(Two bases of same size, each with 2 jeeps, except one is up kinda high on a hill. Give the one that is lower a helicopter?)

3. When if I spawn in a 'base', there's more than one exit. In the case of spawn campers.

4. Allot of people don't like 1 life tdms, since they won't wanna wait a whole round to play again. I recommend just letting them re-spawn.

5. When there is just the right balance of cover.

I like the idea of giving people different loadouts via a randomizer or something. For example, imagine a civil war like setting in a village, and the game mode is free for all deathmatch. Not everyone has the same equipment on them, so I think in that case a randomizer works well, however the idea of everyone having equality is out of the table. It does add to overall fun factor though.

I guess you could call that fun.

I forget who this belonged to, but there was a really nice trench TDM around a while ago that was extremely balanced and fun. I spent hours playing there and it was near always populated.

Oh, It also was Capture the Flag.

What I hate to see:

-   Unreasonable weapons that result in everyone using the most powerful one available (which often ends up being a sniper) making close range combat horribly handicapped

- If a TDM, when teams fail to co-operate and everyone is blocking exits to the spawn rooms, jumping over each other to select weapons, and fighting for themselves failing to support or look out for team mates, sometimes even getting in their way or doing something that makes the other guy die (this happens a lot in capture the flag)

- stuff tiny maps that are overcrowded with stupid player limits

- Admins that don't mind fetching, finding, and screwing with drop camera

- Horrible potholes (in dirt trench DMs) that make you fall and get stuck, and ultimately trap you until you get shot from above

- People who are ungraceful, especially with stupid kills (like spawn kills) and think they are pr0s

- People who think they are superior killers and are patronizing if you fail to kill them, or who consider tactical moves as "luck"

... think thats all.  :cookieMonster:

I hate* a DM where you get jets and every default weapon.

Basically pressing start mini game on slate.

Edit: wow fail typo

- People not using good tactics, and instead just going kamikaze

- Hosts putting sniper rifles in tiny maps where you don't need them

- People who play the most powerful class and going kamikaze and there's a ten second respawn time and I'm the only one who is an assault class and all of them dead

- And that's about it

Likes:
  • When the deathmatch is given a specific theme. (Sci-fi, modern, etc.)
  • When the players have melee weapons as well as ranged.
  • When weapons are hidden all over the map, constantly changing position after a set number of seconds or rounds.
  • Custom-made uniforms, instead of the default.
  • When there's a point system, instead of a life system.
  • When there's specific classes.
  • When a player's inventory is perfectly balanced.

Dislikes:
  • When Tier Tactical weapons are mixed in with other weapons, etc.
  • When the arena is perfectly symmetrical.
  • When people believe that a good strategy is to just jump-crouch constantly while firing. WHICH IS NOT A GOOD STRATEGY AT ALL.
  • When there's a weapon-buying system.

Hates:
  • Most weapon-buying systems.  Spade is the only one I've seen who did this right, I don't know why.
  • Horribly unbalanced teams (I'm looking at you, heedicalking)
  • TF2 servers that don't use TF2 weapons
  • Fortwars where the host leaves items such as the homing rocket launcher, Airstrike/artillery beacon and other overpowered weapons enabled for no reason then expects people not to use them

I'll do my loves later.

Likes
  • When it uses ONE weapon set and not a large amount of single weapons
  • T+T with all sets enabled (except skins)
  • Vehicles
  • Customizable Loadouts made so that you get a big gun, a sidearm, and a grenade or something
  • The Medkit
  • Interesting Twists to the match (like the Bounty Hunter gamemode)
Dislikes
  • The Pill item, it's kinda OP. You know, with the instant heal.
  • Knife TDMs in general
  • Using score to buy better weapons
  • Non-Reloading weapons
  • The Jump and Crouch, Pray and Spray strategy that almost everyone employs
  • The host using timescale commands
  • Trench TDM's where you can't kill builders. Seriously builders, you're standing in the open what the forget do you think is gonna happen?
  • Horribly Unbalanced Teams (The Indians vs Military that heed used to run)
  • Prisoners.
  • Having a "Civilian Team" that isn't armed, it might be realistic but its no fun at all.

DISKLIKES:
  • Players find and use loopholes alot and the host/admins don't give a forget. (eg: rocketjumping out of the loving map, I'm looking at you Uglynator)
  • Stolen/default maps, even if slightly improved the host/admins don't give a stuff about the fact that the map still has incorrect/out of context spots. (again, looking at you, Uglynator)
  • Imbalanced teams - those guys get RPGs, two helicopters, an AA truck, 3 turrets, 2 jeeps, an armored truck and a hugeass base , while we get 1 heli and a jeep, how the forget will that go (looking at whoever hosted that old Red vs Blue TDM with CP's)
  • Imbalanced players - how the forget are we, with a gun, supposed to beat a guy with a beam rifle and 3 RPG's, even if they earned them by points, a newbie stands no chance (this time I'm looking at you, TomTom)
  • Teams behaving like stuff - if I want to go with a tank out the loving gate, wait until I'm gone and save us 5 minutes of crashing into eachother

Likes: Severs that let you rocket jump.
Guns that look like toys (Like the default weapons)

Dislikes: reloading
              real looking guns
              crouching
              KNIFE DMS
