Author Topic: Shooter games are just not engaging  (Read 2955 times)

Really, I have been playing a lot of shooter games lately, CoD series, Bioshock, Lost Planet 1-2, and all of them are just the same thing with different storylines. There are still some fun and original ones out there, I'll admit that, but those are the ones that almost no one plays due to their difficulty and/or the fact they are made by a second-hand developer.

A lot of them times I actually find myself setting the difficulty to the easiest settings because I don't feel like trying so hard to get through one wave of enemies just to do it again in another 5 seconds. The only interesting parts of these games are the storylines, really. I mean, Bioshock is so goddamn interesting but the gameplay is so goddamn boring, run around for 20 minuets searching every room for stuff, then go and fight five crazy stuffs, maybe run into a big daddy, run around in circles shooting him with electric buck, get little sister. I basically summed up the whole game right there, its the same thing over and over with a very intriguing storyline.

Games that ARE good, like Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, all require some level of skill and strategy. If you play the  hardest difficulty on GRAW 2, you can't just run around the field shooting like a crazy motherforgeter lobbing grenades every whichway then taking cover, regaining health and doing it again. You have to think about each battle carefully, gauging how you should move your squad, how many guys you can take out with one grenade, all that. It's difficult, you have to think, you don't just point and shoot. This is why I also find strategy games so fun because you can't win (usually) by doing the same thing every time.

tl;dr videogame companies need to get their act together and make harder shooters that require more thinking.

Try Mass Effect. The hardest difficulties will kick your ass, but if you use your brain, you'll survive. Clearing rooms of enemies on Insanity is soooo rewarding.

If you like realistic games or tactic shooters that require lot's of thinking and not just running into bloody groups of handicapped AI controlled bitches that you have to kill you may want to try Arma2.

That game is very difficult but fun
A single bullet in your chest and you are either dead or heavily wounded and your aim becomes worse.
The AI one higher difficulties is batstuffs insane and will turn you into swiss cheese if you don't use correct tactics or tactical movement.
You may also control a squad of soldiers and vehicles and tell them what to do.
Not to mention that multiplayer is very loving fun with friends

If you would come online on steam more often I could certainly tell you more about it

Demo is full game with limitations.

A lot of FPS games are built for the generic action player IE Brink, Battlefield 3 and CoD. Those games difficulties scale like ass, they go from stupid AI to Stupid AI that does x4 the damage and spams grenades at you. These days any game that try to make you think they add in the dumbest classes into the game making it a breeze like Desu Ex, the stealth Mechanic just ruined the point of attempting to hide. Even older games like TF2 has gotten to the point where the skill has completely been ripped out of the game instead its been replaced with 100 new items that players can pay for. Before it used to be very tight and you knew what you were up against, now its just random stuff flying in left and right.

I've yet to find a game other then Arma to reel me in like BF2142 did or BF2.

I get games that have online play being repetitive, its not like they can do much to spice it up. But the campaigns on almost every shooter suck stuff because the game company just focuses on online play mostly.

Also GRAW is a great game along with flashpoint, both are pretty difficult.

I didn't read most of that wall of text, ill be honest. But if you think that shooters aren't engaging, you need to get high and play CS:S. I've been playing CS for like 12 years now and I'm still not bored.

I honestly thought I spent too much money on that game, it's basically TF2 with better graphics.
