He's right. Think about what weapons would be actually available to everyone in this setting. Shotguns, rifles, pistols... That's all..... Maybe the military left some SMGs around, but I'm all for getting completely rid of SMGs and the RPG and such. This would make people less fearless and more realistic, and it would make RPing better.
Oh yeah and melee's good.... Lots and lots of melee...
