That means they are offline now.

I think there was a certain mode or something that you could enable before it was removed

Our names are italicized because we had "appear offline" on (or something along those lines), But it was removed and that happened to us for some reason.

If you go offline (or idle) your name slowly goes to the bottom of the online users box.
