Interesting subject + good composition = Good picture.
I too used to think that a picture of any boring subject could be made into a good picture if the photographer made it interesting enough. I'm starting to think that isn't completely true. Yeah, if you take a sharp, correctly exposed and creatively composed picture of a hose, it may be an okay picture. People might look at it for a second and think "that's kind of pretty". However, being just a picture of a hose, it lacks impact and is simply boring. The audience will forget about it and go on with their life.
That doesn't mean that you shouldn't take pictures of random stuff. It can be fun, and can help improve you skill. You might happen to get a picture or two that are interesting, but most of the time when you're taking pictures of boring stuff your pictures will most likely be boring.
I like most of Sirrus' other work (especially his black and white stuff), but his "rurex" set (the one with the hose) isn't that great.
