Author Topic: Bought MW2 PC retail, doesn't work?  (Read 1075 times)

So, I bought a copy of MW2 from a local game store. When I went home to activate it on Steam, it said that the key had already been used. So, what should I do? Should I just return it to the store, or can I talk to Steam Support or something?

http://steamcommunity.com/id/tehcactus/home - if you want to help.

first: why did you buy mw2? that game is horrible
second: if you bought it from a gamestore (used, I'm implying) then no stuff the key's already used
third: why didn't you just buy it on steam
fourth: return it to the store

I can only guess that it was pre-owned and the key was already used, your typing it in wrong or steam is just being wonky. I'd return it immediately.

Get over it, stop pushing your opinion when it's not wanted.

Also, try steam support just in case, I don't know what they'll do but it's worth a shot.

I don't believe stores are even allowed to sell used pc games because of them being locked to a cd key.

Two of three lines have nothing to do with your post, and I'm not "stuffting" on your opinion, I'm just saying he doesn't want to hear it, so don't over-react.

well he never said he didn't want to hear it
and I didn't overreact, you did by reediting to opinionise my opinion
quit being a hypocrite

Return it to the store for a refund.

You cannot buy a used PC game, Gamestop does not do used PC games because of the way serial keys have evolved to being only uniquely activated as opposed to how they used to be able to be activated multiple times and not be registered uniquely.

If it comes up as the key is used, however, you should definitely contact Steam support.  They should let you know what course of action to take, whether it's they who will fix it or if they'll direct you to Activision or Gamestop.  Worse comes to worse, bring it back to Gamestop and tell them that the key won't activate.

Where you buy it anyways? Can steam support renew keys if he has a proof of purchase?

So someone, Jairo, has already walked into the thread to say how stuff MW2 is?

Steam ruins everything. Simple.

third: why didn't you just buy it on steam
Download time maybe?

If you got it for any multiplayer experience, you came a bit too late.

The master server is still up, but the list is almost loving barren of servers. You'll get lucky sometimes and end up in a full match, but that's after waiting 10-15 minutes for it to find a damn server.

Damn, you already beat me to that. I remember many years ago, I tried to return a PC game to GameStop. The guy only took one back, and he really only did because we had the receipt. Although those games weren't key activated back then - It was more about ripping the game than using a key. Point being, any chain game store shouldn't be buying or selling used PC games.

I'm sure I have enough authority to call mw2 stuff considering I've owned it since its release
but hey if you want to become ignorant apes, don't look my way

It's possible you got unlucky and have someone there who steals game keys from stores, and puts back the games. I know, we have one here, so I avoid buying PC games from stores, even if it's a new copy, because I might grab one that the key was used from.
