here. here is how you make shading work. choose a color, and then make another color by jumping a few shades down from the initial color. dont make 30 forgetin highly precise variations of the same color, if anything eyedrop a darker color from elsewhere in the image and use that
preach it!
also: HUE SHIFTING. UTILIZE THAT stuff.

i think noise can work good, see cortex command

cortex command used incredibly low res sprites with lots of differentiation in color in very small areas

cybertails has needlessly high res sprites with almost no differentiation in color over very small areas
