Paint.net is annoying to use now, simply because they put the zoom at the bottom.

i just use game maker's default image editor, it's pretty beast

although when i'm on my laptop, i use this program called pixen which is pretty good i guess. it's for mac only though

i recommend asesprite for exporting GIFS into sprite sheets or vice-versa, but nor for actually spriting in it. it's really clunky to work with and it's really distracting

You can just use the hotkey for zoom in Paint.NET you know...

That seems kinda unnatural when they just could've kept the most practical version for zooming in and out accurately.

That is only the case for using the Drop-Down menu. If you use the Ctrl+ScrollWheel you will eventually do it naturally and just fine adjust it while only looking at the drop-down.
