im real loving tired of literally all indie devs at the moment using pixel art thats reminiscent of the nes days, but this rant is off topic, for your first piece it doesnt look to bad. if your trying to make a person / weird alien thing it looks fine for a first piece, if you animated it you could probably do something cool with it too.

On that note, I don't mind (quite enjoy, rather) NES-style/inspired pixel art when it's actually done well:

But this stuff.  THIS stuff I hate:

I understand that most of the games made with art styles like this are comedic and not meant to be taken seriously, but occasionally you get one that is meant to be serious.  It's lazy as hell and it just looks awful.

yes but that art is more styled with snes in mind, while a lot of indie devs use the 8-bit  mario bros look, and it just doesnt work unless you put in a lot of detail, which you cant do with 8-bit (inspired) graphics.

EDIT; actually, a lot of detail isn't a selling point for the nes graphics, now that i think about it. with nes graphics you have to be careful and make sure you dont add that modern tinge to it (lighting, effects, ect) because those really spoil the effect and make the blocky textures look 3-d and its really weird and ugly.
