Author Topic: Marching band: should it be considered a sport??  (Read 5019 times)

yeah sure why not.

No
There really isn't a goal
I mean, really
You're marching
In a band
That's it
It may be physically taxing, but so is carrying around a bunch of textbooks, that isn't a sport

marching band is like saying that playing the guitar is a sport

simply stated; it's not

marching band requires no more effort than having an ensamble.

But imo its just a bunch of nerds on a field.
You're so cool I wish I was as cool as you

Sooo.

How many of you have ever actually been in a marching band before?

You're so cool I wish I was as cool as you

me too. i wish i was as cool as i.

also, since when were there marching band teams?

marching band is not competitive and does not have any sportive qualities other than carrying things. it has no objective other than to play music, the fact that they are playing music while on a field does not make it a sport. sports don't need to be exciting, see croquet or golf, they need to have a goal and some kind of physical talent to fulfill that goal. since marching band has no goal and involves musical, not physical talent, it is not a sport.

One thing that makes up a sport is their competitive nature, marching band is just walking around with an instrument and playing it. Sure, you have to be fit for it, you have to run and maybe lift a little bit, but its not a sport itself.

Things like dancing require you to be fit, they require practice, they need preparation.  But dancing isn't a sport either, there are no sport like aspects to it. Chess is like the same thing, there is competitive chess (and dancing), but that wont make it a sport, its just an activity.
also, since when were there marching band teams?
I think there are competitive marching band squads, so that counts. Kind of like Drumline.

>There are marching band competitions
>I'm pretty sure a group of people working together is a team
>Playing an instrument is indeed a physical challenge
>Carrying things, Marching, Formations, Playing an instrument all simultaneously

It may not be a sport but it's not like it's a loving cakewalk, lol.

you don t score points in a marching band and that is likw the selling opoint of spotrts so its n ot  a psotr

Sooo.

I have, and im currently in one.

all of you need to keep in mind nascar, track, diving, and gymnastics are considered a sport.

Are you all handicapped? Seriously, You are doing having a physical strain, you compete to win the highest score at tournament, just like in diving and gymnastics, you work with a very large team, and it HAS TO BE PERFECT every time. all of you are comparing it to small tasks, but marching is much more. and to the guy who called us nerds, and the other that said we dont have and physical tallents, i also play soccer. The trombone section leader plays football for the freshman team. And honestly, marching is MUCH more difficult then soccer, or football. anyone can get smacked by a giant sweaty jock, and throw a ball at another.

Marching around like silly people isnt a sport.
