Well that's the thing. LoL isn't so much a copy of DotA as it is an easier/simpler version, which is something that's completely acceptable. LoL and DotA generally appeal to different audiences and can both strive as seperate games, but there's almost no reason to play HoN over DotA 2 since it's just an attempt at a direct copy of it.

I am now confident in become good at vlad so I have some questions;
1. Is he a viable solo top?
2. Ive been starting out with Boots + 3 pots with him, is that good?
3. Ive been building CDRboots -> Will of the Ancients -> Rylais -> Rabadons -> Warmogs, good?
4. How should I level his skills? Ive just been maxxing Q as fast as possible, then E, then W. And leveling ult whenever possible.

1. yes. he's usually better than melee champs that can't attack from range like udyr. (just q harass infinitely. don't get cs with q, just basic attack them. if you can't, then practice his attack animation, which i personally hate)

3. nope. sorc shoes -> WotA -> Rabadons/Rylais (situational) -> whatever you didn't get from the last step -> zhonya's/abyssal scepter (situational) -> void staff/zhonyas/abyssal scepter (situational)

noticed this watching dyrus play and playing him myself.. it's sad D:
anyways i <3 shen, played him top and support and so far whipping ass. pretty fun.

the ults saving people and making them ever yours for loving while pissing off the enemies is fun too.. was on skype with someone screaming super loud and ulted them.. the enemy mid was screaming "WTF SHEN I HATE YOU" and my friend was screaming "OH MY GOD I LOVE YOU" and like a boss.
