Make gloves using the cloth and bones. (2 SETS) Give it to the mages.

But what kind of spell was it?  was it close range, long range, etc?  And so my new one is more powerful?

Look for books concerning forbidden magic

Oh I see what you mean. Staffs dont work like that (I may have changed stuff). Basically, a fire crystal will allow you to cast fire spells for 0 mana. Yes, it seems your new crystal is more powerful.

Oh ok.

Sell the old slightly weaker fire crystal for a nice sum.  Strike up a casual conversation with the merchant to find out info

[3] - You combine cloth and bone to create two sets of gloves. These gloves give off an odd presence, so you decide to give them to the mages.

Look for books concerning forbidden magic
[6] - You search around for any books containing forbidden magic. The task is hard because, well, its forbidden, but you manage to find a book entitled, "Necromancer" underneath a table. You brush off the dust and cobwebs from the cover of the book and open it. Upon opening it, all candles, light sources, ect, are blown out, and you hear an odd creaking noise from below you.

Cast a spell on him to make him super friendly with me and then complete the previous action

Head to the library in the honors district, look for some books on proper dagger techniques and the like, possibly meet up with whatshisrichard and read books with him to gain some sort of magic ability (increase magica skill if at all possible).

Use awesomeness to talk to people and learn stuff.
